Some are saying that Australian VET and post-secondary education more generally are awash with reviews.
Here are a couple of new ones.
The Victorian Review
Jenny Macklin, a former minister in the Rudd and Gillard Labor governments, will lead a wide-ranging 12-month review.
You can find some information about it, including its terms of reference, here. You can also look at a media release by the Victorian Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, the Hon Gayle Tierney. The review’s purpose is to “ensure Victoria has a quality vocational education and training (VET) system ready to equip Victorians with the skills they need for current and future jobs, with strong connections and pathways between VET and Higher Education as well as schooling.”
The review will produce specific advice to the Minister. It is proposed to develop an “Issues Paper identifying issues and, potentially, broad recommendations for reform, by the end of February 2020.” The final report is due within 12 months.
The ASQA review
Following the Braithwaite and Joyce Reviews the Chief Commissioner of ASQA, Mark Paterson AO, “has decided the proposed shift in direction for ASQA provides an appropriate time for him to step down and pass responsibility for managing the next phase of ASQA’s evolution to others,” the Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, said in a joint media release with the Assistant Minister the Hon Steve Irons. Minister Cash announced the appointment of Mr Adam Boyton as the interim National Skills Commissioner in a media release on 24 October.
Finally, Minister Cash announced a review of ASQA on 30 October, “with a focus on the regulator’s governance, policies and culture.” “The Government’s rapid review will inform a 12 to 18-month program of improvements that will ensure regulation by ASQA is transparent and effective,” Minister Cash said.
