Regular readers will know we have written a lot about micro credentials over the last several years. This article is an attempt at some consolidation, plus offering some new insights.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a growing focus of policy and revised practices in relation to these shorter-form \u2018qualifications\u2019 and will be interesting to see how they are used as the newly formed Jobs and Skills Councils here get down to business.<\/span><\/p>\n

Issues and insights from earlier articles\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

  A past VDC News article highlighted a <\/span>micro credentials paper forming part of Australia\u2019s VET Reform Roadmap<\/span><\/a>. In addition, initiatives on micro credentials in <\/span>South Australia<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>New Zealand<\/span><\/a> (In an article entitled Are micro credentials a way to go bro?), <\/span>Canada<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Europe<\/span><\/a>, have been described over the last several years in the pages of VDC News.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  Their links to the broader qualification framework is important too, making the <\/span>implementation of the new AQF<\/span><\/a> and the opening up of learning pathways proposed in the <\/span>Noonan Review<\/span><\/a> really important.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  New thoughts<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

  A recent article in <\/span>The Conversation<\/span><\/a> identifies 4 things individuals need to consider first when thinking about whether to undertake a micro credential course. (The article is written a higher education focus, though). These are:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. What the individual wants out of the course<\/span><\/b> \u2013 given that they are \u201chighly targeted to cover precise competencies in a specific setting. This means they are rarely designed to develop broader capabilities and frameworks of \u2026 practice [that] can normally [be expected] from a [longer] program.\u201d<\/span> \u201c<\/span>In a nutshell, if you need a specific skill, then a micro<\/span> credential is ideal.\u201d\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. What specific skills are on offer \u2013 <\/span><\/b>simply, the key question is: <\/span>\u2018Does this course offer a skill that someone actually needs?\u2019\u202f<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The suitability of this form of study<\/span><\/b> \u2013 noting that \u201c<\/span>micro credentials generally focus very strongly on the content itself.\u201d Thus, how a person learns is generally up to them, and \u201cTo be successful, you may be required to take greater personal responsibility for all your own learning strategies. This might include recognising what you already know (or don\u2019t know) about the topic, taking a quick look at the readings to get an overview before reading them carefully for more details, and adopting processes to critically question learning materials.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. How the micro credential will be used on the job<\/span><\/b> \u2013 This involves thinking about how the process and outcomes of this short-form course will transfer to the reality of work. In the view of the article\u2019s author, therefore, \u201c<\/span>micro credentials will work best for people who have established good professional development practices like reflection and peer-review, or for those who can engage in active and ethical experimentation with the new skill in their real-world practice.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
