VDC held its annual VET National Teaching & Learning Conference at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on 15 and 16 August. It proved to be largest and (arguably) best yet, with the theme at this sold-out event “From Competence to Excellence – Strive to Inspire” resonating throughout the program. There were some exceptional keynote presentations and other sessions over the two days, and I’ll highlight a few here, and then focus in on others in subsequent issues of VDC News.

In the first foray into the nitty gritty of the VDC VET National Teaching & Learning Conference, we are featuring presentations by Dr Ben Hamer and Vicki Abraham.

Speaker 1

Ben is a Futurist and an Adjunct Professor at Edith Cowan University. In his keynote presentation (“Everything, everywhere, all at once”) he focused on the faster and faster pace of change, and how – as a result – we can get stuck in negative thought loops (How can things go wrong?). However, he thinks it’s better to think about how things could go right.

JSA Commissioner Barney Glover addresses the need for a better-connected tertiary ed system

Professor Barney Glover AO, the Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia, recently addressed the National Press Club. His speech, entitled Skills success in Australia: Aligning need with know how, stressed “the urgent need for a more connected tertiary education system in this country.”

No frills conference papers and webinar now available

The conference papers from the 33^rd No frills conference held in Perth from 10 to 12 July are now available on the VOCEDPlus website. The theme this year was’ VET partnerships: Powering a dynamic workforce.’ A recent VDC News article summarised the paper NCVER routinely releases before each No frills conference. This year’s was authored by Joanne Waugh. (However, we have also featured research on VET-employer partnerships before in VDC News, and you can access that article here.)

Mapping the role of learning outcomes in training future VET teachers and trainers

Cedefop (The European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training) recently released a new research paper. Its title is “The influence of learning outcomes on pedagogical theory and tools”. It’s a long one – 133 pages – but may be worth VDC News readers dipping into.

VET in schools numbers up in 2023

NCVER has just released the 2023 figures for VET in schools participation. According to NCVER’s press release:

“The VET in Schools 2023 report shows 252 105 school students undertook VET as part of their senior secondary certificate of education in 2023, a 3.8% increase from 2022. Of these, 19 310 (or 7.7%) participated in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, and 232 795 (or 92.3%) in other VET in Schools programs.”

Fourth TAFE Centre of Excellence Established

The fourth TAFE Centre of Excellence, in Early Childhood Education and Care, has been established at TAFE SA. With joint state and federal funding of $28 million it aims to “be a skills leader in early childhood development.”

There are likely to be opportunities for Australian university educators in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and related fields to volunteer for short or long-term teaching roles in Nepal in 2025.

As an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Griffith University, Brisbane, I am a volunteer in 2024 as a Visiting Scholar at Kathmandu University, Nepal with the Australian Volunteers program.

Training.gov.au is changing!

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations will be rolling out changes to enhance Training.gov.au (TGA). The new TGA is more intuitive and accessible, and will deliver:

improved usability;
user friendly navigation paths;
more robust search features; and
enhanced reporting functions.
